The Torqeedo Travel 1103 electric outboard engine now for sale here at Pennine Marine is the direct equivalent of a small conventional 4hp petrol outboard engine - say a modern Honda BF4,  Yamaha F4 or Suzuki DF4 outboard. 
 
The Torqeedo Travel 1103 outboard engine has a power rating of between 3hp to 4hp capacity/output. This is when the power is measured at the outboard engine's propeller. With its nominal horsepower of 3.5hp, a Torqeedo Travel 1103 is rated at slightly below the total power output of a conventional petrol 4hp outboard engine. However the lighter weight and higher torque of the Torqeedo Travel 1103 outboard motor easily compensates for the slightly lower nominal power output. The Torqeedo Travel 1103  electric outboard motor has therefore received great customer reviews for its lightweight alone. However the high trust / high torque Torqeedo propeller and also the very low engine weight of the Torqeedo easily make up the difference. In simple terms: put on the back of a typical small inflatable boat, the Torqeedo Travel 1103 electric outboard engine works the same as a 4hp petrol engine. 

Occasional boat users - especially inexperienced adults, teenagers and children - will  find the Torqeedo electric outboard engine controls incredibly simple and easy to use. There is absolutely no need to get an eight year old grandchild who is "IT savvy" to come along on a day trip to show you how to use this electric outboard engine.
 
The Torqeedo Travel 1103 outboard engines are so simple that you almost don't need to read the instructions, which being written by those German engineers, the Torqeedo instructions are very thorough.
 
The tiller is positioned in the middle of the Torqeedo Travel 1103 electric engine. Therefore no matter what side of the boat the helmsman (or to be politically correct - helmswomen) is sitting on, the Torqeedo Travel 1103 electric outboard is equally easy to use from either side of the boat. This is a definite advantage of the Torqeedo engine over traditional petrol outboards, where the tiller handle will always be offset to one side. One feature of the Torqeedo Travel 1103 electric outboards, one which is really easy to miss at first glance, is reverse gear. To go backwards with a Torqeedo engine - you just turn the tiller throttle control in the opposite direction.  One can go instantly backwards (sorry; I meant to say asterm) at full speed. Please note that the safety pin does need to be locked before going fast in reverse.....
 
This picture shows the optional remote control unit: with digital readout and little lever. On the main Torqeedo 1103 unit the digital readout  is built into the tiller handle. (please note: this pictured optionnal accessory is usually used on yachts: see below).

Please note that there is no oil to drain out and nothing to leak when taking the Torqeedo Travel 1103 outboard engine to pieces. The simplicity is in the German design = very clever those German's in Munich. No fiddly screws etc (note: we think Ikea could really learn something from Torqeedo). Best of all no tools nor instructions required required!. Thus the Travel 1103 can be easily be lifted in an out of cars, caravans, boat lockers, lazartees etc (on the boat: not the famous holiday island). Indeed the Torqeedo Travel motirs can be split down to be safely carried, or stored, almost anywhere.
As described beow, from standing start with a complete and working Torqeedo Travel 1103S unit. From turning it off it took us no more than two (yes - 2 minutes = 120 seconds) to get to this stage - of carrying just the driveshaft.  Alternatively it can go in a Torqeedo  carry bag - or it can even be stowed "loose" in the boat's locker. Thus for all parts of the portable outboard engine market - yachts and motor-cruisers, cars caravans and motor-homes - the light weight and abscence of oil and fumes makes the Torqeedo Travel 1003 and 1103 very easy to carry in and out for a day trip.

The sophisticated Torqeedo Travel 1103 lithium-ion battery lies at the heart Torqeedo's electric outboard engine technology. The Torqeedo Travel battery specifications changed back in 2020: so the extended range battery - the C -  the 2023 "standard model".
 
EXTENDED RANGE BATTERY - 915 Wh - "C MODEL":  The 2023 Standard !
 
The 915W (C) torqeedo Travel batteries can also  be purchased separately, as an optional extra for the older Travel 1003 engines - as the extended range battery fits all Travel model, short or long outboards; old and new  i.e. it is fully inter-changeable. 
So how is this magic achieved?  Very simple - those clever Gerrman engineeers at Torqeedo have packed far more lithium ion cells, each one thinner, into the same battery chassis. They also added more and better software in the battery controller. This innovation just shows how far Torqeedo's battery technology and design has moved on in recent years. Thus with the C extended range battery you get more power in the same pack: literally a quart of power-packed into a pint pot (Incidentially: I wish my local pub did that.....) .  Please note that this Torqeedo Travel 1103 lithium-ion battery cannot be taken on a aeroplane as hand or hold luggage. Nor can a Torqeedo battery be sent as normal airfreight. If you do have an unusual requirement for transporting or using your Torqeedo lithium-ion battery  please contact ourselves for advice and also to obtain the Torqeedo manufacturers safety data sheet. Mind you.....not that many people are flying these days...

This Torqeedo Travel 1103 two-bladed propeller is a high-torque unit which is optimised for low and medium speeds, making it ideal for most applications. There are a few alternative propellers available. However in practice, we have always found that the standard Toqeedo Travel 1003 and 1103 propeller (as factory-fitted by those diligent German's in Germany... ) seems to work fine and almost every boat, both large and small.
 
Please note that the Travel 1103, the Torqeedo Travel silent drive model, uses a different propeller. This is more advanced that that fitted on the older Travel 1003. It is so advanced that we do not yet have a photo of it... Very important note: the Travel 1003 and 1103 propellers are NOT interchangeable.
 
Torqeedo propeller spare parts kits are held in stock: for those nasty occasions where the score-card for your day out says -  "underwater rock vis you = 1 - nil to the rock").

The Torqeedo Travel 1103 electric outboard engine - weighting in at a total of less than 15 kg - makes it an incredibly lightweight and portable 4hp outboard.
Therefore the Torqeedo electric outboard motors - complete with its intergrated battery - is COMPLETE approximately half  (yes, we did get that right - half !) the weight of the "best-in-class" 4hp petrol outboard engine sold on the UK market today, the Suzuki DF4. The Suzuki DF4 outboard engine weighs in at 25kg. All other petrol powered outboard engines in the 4hp outboard engine class generally weight in more, usually at about 27-30kg. Petrol-driven outboard engine competitors to the Torqeedo look positively obese by comparison. 
The Torqeedo Travel 1103 electric outboard engine can therefore easily be lifted by lazy teenagers, petite women and grand-parents.
Furthermore the total lifting weight of the Torqeedo Travel 1103 can easaily be halved, by splitting down to three sections -  the battery; the shaft and the tiller handle. this can be done in two minutes flat.

Getting started
To get started with silent  boating. Unpack the Torqeedo Travel 1003 or 1103; read the simple instructions. Then "top up the juice" with a first charge on the Torqeedo 1103 battery (Note: mains or portable electricity supply required (not included). No need to be cold-called by an electricity salesmen). You then assemble your new the Torqeedo Travel 1103 outboard engine within 2 minutes  (no fiddly Ikea style screws: this is Made in Germany, not Sweden!).  If you are collecting it from here, we can of course demonstrate the assembly techniques. The Torqeedo Travel 1103 electric outboard engine can be charged from a variety of electricity sources.
Normally your new Torqeedo outboard engine would be charged off the mains: however the Torqeedo's charging system is so flexible it can be charged from an an on-board marine generator, car lighter socket or even a solar panel. Basically almost all electrical sources of the correct voltage or higher are all capable of being easily used to charge the Torqeedo Travel 1103 motors. If required, the Travel battery can be completely removed and then charged and stored completely separately from the main body/shaft of the Torqeedo Travel motor.  It is easily possible to arrange alternative methods of charging the Torqeedo Travel 1103 outboard engine. Any variety of electrical systems can be used other than using the mains electricity. We have had numerous Torqeedo Travel customers who have used on-board yacht-based generators or even car cigarette lighters or camping generators or works generators. In these cases, the various different adaptors (available from most electrical retailers) should allow the Torqeedo Travel 1103 outboard engines to be charged "on site and in-situ" in a wide variety of situations. (adaptors are UK/Continental standard, so available at ordinary nationwide electrical retailers, such as City Electrical CEF)
 
Then you fix the Torqeedo Travel on the back of your boat,  and away you go. Once you are going in a straight line, the next thing you will do is to look down - to wonder why you are moving along without making any noise. Please note that the 1103 model is even quieter than the older, well-priven, standard 1003 model used to be (see below).

NOTE: EXTENDED RANGE BATTERY PERFORMANCE / RANGES / DISTANCES TO BE CONFIRMED IN 2021: It's a long way....
From talking to our customers about our customers own experiences, the range of the Torqeedo's Travel 1103 batteries has, for all practical terms, proved to be excellent. Only some of our Torqeedo Travel customers, those wanting an exceptional long range, ever needing to buy a second battery (note: usually as a back-up). However the extended range Torqeedo battery, the Travel 1103 C model alwasy proved to be quite popular with many boat owners who needed to reguarly "punch the tide" and want the certainty that they will have enough "battery juice" left in. making sure you have enough electrcial juice prevents the disease called "range anxitity" (Have I spelt that medical term properly?). 
 
However with flat-out, full-throttle power, TBA is possible when running the standard Torqeedo Travel 1103 C model electric outboard at full speed. Frankly we do not recommend the standard Torqeedo Travel battery if you need both long-range and also full-power settings at all times. However we must stress it is very unusual for your boat to need this "constantly-high" throttle setting. These Torqeedo Travel 1103 engines now come, from Sept 2020 onwards, with the "C" 920W extended range battery.
 
However if you think need to use the Torqeedo 1103 electric engine for longer journeys, then a spare 920W battery is extremely useful when either doing long "ferry trips" or when running against strong tidal streams, (say above 5 knots) . Please contact ourselves for advice if you need a high-power and also long-range Torqeedo application.
 
When using the standard Torqeedo Travel 1103S outboard with standard 920Wh battery at half to three-quarter throttle - which is in practice a realistic setting to use on an outboard engine - the Torqeedo Travel 1103 outboard motor's intergated battery will last up to ???  hours. When using the Torqeedo Travel 1103 at these revs this will give you an effective range of very approximately ???? miles.

If you require further advice, please contact ourselves for advice about using Torqeedo short or long shaft electric engines on sailing craft: either as the primary engine, or as an auxillary engine. We will need to know your boat type and (for certain makes) the well size into which your new electric outboard is intended to fit into. 
 
These Torqeedo Travel engines on sailing boats often need the remote throttle kit. On this example, it all looks a bit complicated..... however on this customer's own boat the cockpit was so tight for space that the Torqedo tiller handle was permenantly removed .......and replaced by the optional Torqeedo throttle lever ..... which is seen here immediately alongside the engine (to the right of the "handle-less engine)).. On other examples, we have not only remotely mounted the throttle, we have also remotely mounted the batteries (this needs optional accessories).

Introduction

CURRENT TORQEEDO BATTERY MODELS

EXTENDED RANGE BATTERY - 915 Wh - "C MODEL":  The 2022 Standard
The extended range battery is the Torqeedo "C" - a 915 Wh battery - 29V.  This "C" Travel battery model was originally introduced, as an option, by Torqeedo back in 2017, when it proved to be wildly popular. That is why, back in late 2020, the extended range battery has became the new normal: the standard batteries. These extended range Torqeedo "C" batteries are now purchased new, fitted as standard, to both the Travel 1103 models.  The C is fitted as standard to the Torqeedo Travel 1103. Thus the extended range "C" battery comes as standard on both the new Travel 1103 (super-silent model). The C batteries can also still be purchased separately, as an optional extra / spare battery.
The extended range battery can be used with short (standard) or long shaft outboards: it is fully inter-changeable. The extended range C 915Wh battery looks and feels  identical, and is almost exactly the same weight, as the old orginal (now discontinued 520Wh) "old standard" battery. So how is this magic achieved?  Very simple - those clever Gerrman engineeers at Torqeedo have simply packed far more lithium ion cells, but each one thinner, into the same battery chassis and shell. Then they have added more and better software in the battery controller. This innovation just shows how far Torqeedo's battery technology and design has moved on in recent years. Thus with the C extended range battery you get more power in tliterally a quart of power-packed into a pint pot (Incidentially: I wish my local pub did that.....)
 
STANDARD BATTERY - 530 Wh (The old standard:  still available as a spare)
This standard battery unit used to be the Torqeedo Travel 1003 - a 530W battery -  29V and 19 amp/hours. This old one was the standard Torqeedo Travel motor battery and it was the one we had sold hundreds of over ten yaers. It had proved very sucessful for most, but not quite all, marine applications. THE 500W BATTERY IS ONLY AVAILABLE AS A SPARE BATTERY.
 
LOW POWERED BATTERY - 320 Wh - ULTRALIGHT
The low-powered battery is the Torqeedo Travel 503 - a 320 Wh battery - 29V and 11 amp/hours. This is the low-powered Torqeedo Travel battery. In our opinion this battery is only really suitable for inland use on canoes and tiny boats used on small ponds (i.e. it is a trolling motor for fishing). 
 
INTERCHANGEABLE TORQEEDO BATTERIES: ALL  ARE THE SAME SIZE
All Torqeedo Travel batteries are interchangeable: thus any one will fit straight onto aeither the older/standard Travel 1003 or 1103 engine. The C model extended range Travel motor battery is fully interchageable with all earlier /older battery models: so you can upgrade your old engine by simply buying a new battery. All Torqeedo Travel batteries are fully interchangeable with either of the other two models of batteries.  Frankly you would be very hard pressed to identify the differences between them (or, at least, without reading the instructions). The model of battery is the same on either short or long shaft Torqeedo Travel 1003 and 1103 engines.
 
TORQEEDO BATTERIES -  IMPORTANT AIRCRAFT SAFETY NOTE
Please note that this Torqeedo Travel 1103 and older 1003 lithium-ion battery cannot be taken on a aeroplane as hand or hold luggage. Nor can any Torqeedo battery be sent as normal airfreight. TORQEEDO CRUISE ENGINES
These are a range of "fixed" engines -powered at 5hp,: 8hp and 20hp . The Torqeedo Cruise are medium-performance electric outboard engines.
These are ideal for boats up to 5m: so motorboats, river boats and canal boats etc; right up to commercial applications of ten tons 
 
TORQEEDO DEEP BLUE
The ultimate in electric outboard engine technology: these Deep Blue engines really show what can be done with a modern and powerful, but still environmentally-friendly outboard engine. Torqeedo Deep Blue is a range of 40hp and 80hp electric outboard engines.
