So the Tohatsu 20 hp fuel-injected engines .....what has changed..????
 
Let us be honest here: as we always are with our customers....The older model of the Tohatsu 20hp was a good and solid engine: with the key word being solid. Robust and dependable: as are so many Tohatsu's. However in the 20hp class it was completely out-classed a few years ago by the introduction of the game-changing Suzuki 20hp DF20 engine: which was the one model which really introduced the art of fuel injection into the 20hp class of portable outboard engines. On any brand and size of engine, the electronic fuel injection makes a big difference: in two ways. Firstly it helps to reduce weight and secondly it improves both performance and throttle control: which is achieved by better regulating the mixture of fuel and air entering into the engine. Better control of the vital fuel-air mixture means better performance. ..... Thus, for a few years, the Suzuki DF20 outclassed every other manufacturer's engine in the 20hp class; maintaining a lead which was very unusual.... You have to remember that the Japanese outboard engine manufacturers always compete very very hard with each other......despite maintaining an inscruitable public facade....
 
So what did Tohatsu do?  In 2018 they decided to take on Suzuki at their own game.....Quite simply: they locked their Tohatsu design engineers in a darkened room with only a small amount of food - and told them to loose weight. The engineers were not to come out again until they had met some very strict targets for being leaner and meaner than the Suzuki DF20.  No, you ******, not the engineer's themselves were told to loose weight: the engineer's were told to make sure that the Tohatsu 20hp engine was to loose weight: to become leaner and meaner than the opposition. Thus in 2018 they took the well-proven Tohatsu 20hp engine design: and then they took off all of its middle-aged spread. In fact: they then went further....and thus by the time they had finished what emerged in 2019 was effectvely an all-new 20hp outboard engine design. We understand that a total of 240 items inside the Tohatsu 20hp outboard engine were redesigned from scratch..,.
 
Thus fully 10kg was "removed" from the MPS 20E - when compared with the older Tohatsu model. This may not sound like much: however it is almost 20% of the engine weight: and in the portable 20hp engine class, that is a huge difference. How huge, we hear you ask?. Very simply, it means that you can now lift it up - and carry it onto your boat. Not only is it lighter than the Suzuki DF20 - the new Tohatsu MPS 20 E even has a better performance.
 
Thus emerged back in 2019 is quite simply their best new slim-line model: the Tohatsu MPS 20E 20hp model.
 
In tests,  the top speed of the new Tohatsu MPS 20 E engine showed it to be little bit a faster than any of the other three Japanese brands of 20hp engine. That is a first for Tohatsu: and quite remarkable given how good all three of their competitors 20hp engines are. Furthermore the acceleration was very good: however not quite as quick off the mark as one of the others.... However in the third performance class - the all-important measure of fuel economy - the Tohatsu MPS20 E did really well - by beating all of the Japanese competition hands-down. That means only oner thing: that the Tohatsu fuel injection system  on the MPS 20 E is better than the competitiors: because burning less fuel whilst going even faster is what having "Betters E's" really means...
 
.....this was an outboard engine redesign by calorie-counting and utterly obsessed Weight-watchers......  to produce the lightest 20hp outboard engine ever made... So remember the E stands for EFI - Electronic Fuel Injection. 
 
However the Tohatsu engineer's left off the letters F and I - so as to save a litle bit more weight on the new Tohatsu MFS20E ...
